Stay updated with the latest comments and experiences from American International School of Niamey : 11 Jul, 2021 Average monthly salary after taxes and in what currency (explain taxation situation). How often do you get paid throughout the year? : There is an established scale, taking into consideration degrees held, certification, and years of experience. Despite the innate hardships of living in Niger, financially working at the school can be very rewarding. While my actual salary was \"low\" by international standards ($27,000USD), I also received a monthly living allowance in cash that fully covered all my cost of living expenses (ie: food, maid, and internet). As a result, my salary was direct deposited into my bank account in the US, and I never had to touch it! There\'s not a lot to spend money on in Niamey, so I was actually able to save part of my living allowance as well!
One thing to be aware of - the school allows you to ship personal effects in their container from the US for free when you begin your tenure there. While that\'s very helpful, two things should be noted: the items shipped in the summer won\'t arrive until around March of the following year, and shipping things out of Niamey is VERY expensive. The school offered around $3,000 total to cover all shipping expenses; I didn\'t use any of it to get there, but did use it to ship things back to the US when I left. The total weight was significantly less than 300 lbs, and the total shipping cost was well over $5,000usd! Lesson learned - travel light, always!.
